Julian Boncza-Tomaszewski
(St. Petersburg (Russia) 1834 - 1920 Nice (France))
Polish painter born in St. Petersburg in Russia. Received art education in the Imperial; Academy of Art (1855 – 1860) under guidance of Prof. F. A. Bruni. In 1856 was awarded by the Academy with a large silver medal for his work “Judas returning Silver Bribe to Priests” and a small gold medal for the work “Christ Child in the Temple”. In 1860 he left to Italy visiting cities spending most of time in Naples. From 1861 till 1877 he lived in Paris showing his works almost every year gaining recognition for this work “Hipolit, son of Theseus”. In 1882 he was awarded in Russia medal of Saint Anna. Exhibited his works in Paris, Philadelphia (1876), Berlin (1886) and in St.Petersburg (1896). Bończa-Tomaszewski was an author of mythological scenes, portraits, genre scenes, and historical compositions. Some of his most recognized paintings: ‘ The Execution of Brunhilda in 613’, ‘Greeting of Louis XI in his Entry to Paris’, ‘Peter the Great Contemplating Monument of the Cardinal Richelieu’, ‘Scene from the Comedy Tartuffe by Moliere’, ‘Venus and Cupid’, ‘Rosa’, ‘Roman taking Bath’. In 1912 in Warsaw was published album with his works.
