[...] the artistic rank and Protestant distinction of Gdansk continued to grow. The 1520-1620 period was even termed "the golden age of Gdansk painting". Dutch, Flemish, and Italian influence merged in this economically and culturally flourishing seaport centre, located on the border of several cultures, and open to variegated inspirations.
Only here will we find paintings with lay, municipal, and allegorical themes, and groups of works decorating public buildings and patrician residences. Only here did such vivid artistic individualities as Anton Moller, author of paintings praising the town and featured in the Court of Artus, or Izaak van den Blocke, author of complex, virtuoso and Mannerist compositions, choose to reside.
