Under the imaginary name of John False, we would like to present false paintings that carry the attributes of well-known Polish artists. These will include works that have in recent months appeared in catalogues of renowned auction houses in Europe and the U.S.A. They are so weak that they should be detected by specialists employed by these auction houses. However, it seems that large auction houses care little about their reputation, knowing that clients will be found regardless. Most houses do not provide any guarantee that the works sold are authentic. Unfortunately, after buying a false painting, it is sometimes impossible to return it, or there is a limited time frame during which it is the client’s responsibility to prove that the painting is false. We understand that, with a lack of appropriate knowledge, it is difficult to classify an artwork as false. There are debatable artworks whose origins may be impossible to determine: we will not be interested in these works, leaving them to specialists and analytical laboratories. We will be concerned with weaker imitations that have strangely made their way into catalogues. Works collected here, bearing signatures of Polish painters, are false. The possibility of a mistaken appraisal exists, but is minimal. This site will be updated as false works are discovered.
